QR Code

What is a QR Code?

A QR code or Quick Response Codes are a type of two dimensional barcode that can be read using smartphones and dedicated QR reading devices that link directly to text, emails, websites, phone numbers and more.

Traditionally a barcode has been a collection of vertical lines and a standard 1D Barcode (UPC/EAN) is capable of storing up to 30 numbers.

2D or QR Code data is stored in both directions and can be scanned vertically or horizontally and is capable of storing a massive amount of data.

A QR code is an image based text that can be used offline. Any URL can be encoded into a QR code so essentially any webpage can be opened automatically as a result of scanning a barcode.

The main benefit of QR codes is that the can be used for everything and anything and are beneficial to both customers and businesses.

Examples of how QR codes can be used include, but are not limited to:

  • Transport Ticketing
  • Entertainment
  • Commercial Tracking
  • Product Labelling
  • Marketing

The technical specifications for a QR Code are set down in the ISO-18004.
